My name is Lauren/Namakula, and I'm happy to see you here on my blog!

I am a second year PhD Student in the Development Studies program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My research interests are in gender, women's labor force participation, and concepts of power and empowerment. My research will eventually be focused in Uganda - the site of all of previous research and my home from 2008-2009.

Learning Luganda has been a central joy and challenge of my PhD education. This blog is a public diary of sorts, a place to share my weekly experiences, reflections on language learning, and some of the tactics I'm using to study the language independently.

A Gymnast's Guide to Balance, Learning, Evaluation, and Practice

Growing up, I was a (very unaccomplished) gymnast. I loved everything about gymnastics, but I particularly enjoyed the balance beam. I loved being up above the ground, I loved the opportunity to do fancy tricks while dismounting, and I loved the challenge of staying upright on just four inches of wood. Though I could do very few difficult moves in any of the events, on the beam I could do a 720 °  turn - in high school gymnastics, considered a high superior  move - consistently and with ease. The skill of maintaining balance was something I enjoyed and excelled at (I think this may have leaked into other parts of my life!). (not) The End

It's kind of crazy to me that I'm actually at this point: my last (class-related) blogpost, my last assessment, the end of three years of class-assisted independent language learning. But of course, as much as this is the end of something big, it's also the beginning of a new phase, of truly and completely independent language learning. After all this time, and all of this practice, I feel ready to do just that. When I first started this class, that thought intimidated the heck out of me. But now, it feels easy, exciting even, to think of continuing my language study outside of the 671 construct. I am excited about the next chapter in continuing my relationship with Luganda. I just got off of Skype with Simon, where we discussed my proficiency and went over elements of my final exam. Disappointingly, I seem to still be performing at an advanced-mid level. animal week!

Ask any of my friends - I'm more than a little obsessed with animals, and I always have been. I'm always on the lookout for a creature nearby, and I'm known for shouting out the names of animals as I see them. I aspire to be a real birdwatcher (though I don't think I really have the patience for it), and petting zoos are my idea of heaven. So you can imagine that this week, the week I finally started learning animal vocabulary, was a particularly motivating one for me. Indeed, I spent a lot of time on Quizlet practicing animal vocabulary. But despite my high level of motivation, for some reason, I really have been struggling with it!
